Secondary Instruction (Grades 6-12)

Students at Madison Junior High and Madison Consolidated High School continue further development of several key learning strategies.  These various components, which are implemented as part of a diversified learning experience, are designed to assist each student's exploration and development of necessary skills as they work toward the longer term goal of college and career readiness.

At the junior high level, emphasis begins on understanding student interests, strengths, and desires as they begin to align education with possible career pathways.  As students enter high school, our goal is to offer a diversified, intentional curriculum offering which is appealing to all students whether they are 2 or 4-year college bound student, technical or trade oriented, or wish to enter the job market directly following graduation.  We will strive to do this through a solid understanding of each student's strengths, abilities, and goals in order to provide personalized guidance.  With this understanding, we are better able to guide more focused career exploration, strategic alignment of course work with fields of interest, and certifications in areas of technical and skilled trades.

In addition to core content requirements, we continue innovative, career-centric course offerings through our STEAM initiative - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math:
  • Advanced Placement (AP) and dual credit opportunities are available at the junior high and high school level.  Pre-AP course offerings are available at the middle school level as preparation for approximately 20 AP courses available at the high school level.  A cornerstone of this opportunity is our partnership with Ivy Tech Community College to offer the TGEC, which allows students to complete their first year of college while earning their high school diploma.  This saves families within our community approximately $20,000 per student in college expenses.
  • PLTW curriculum includes focused content areas in Biomedical, Engineering, and Computer Science.  These courses are part of a career pathway structure designed to provide an opportunity for career exploration and development of foundational skills in high demand job market areas.
  • Fine Arts Academy enables students to further focus efforts and attention in the areas of creative dramatics, choral and instrumental music, dance, studio art, and art and music history.
  • Foreign language instruction is offered to all students as a way to introduce cultural exploration and linguistic opportunity.   Spanish and Chinese are offered at the junior high level, and offerings expand to include French and German at the high school level.
  • Digital Citizenship is a priority as students continue use of technology and develop their digital footprint.  In a world full of technology, we (parents and educators) have a responsibility to teach students appropriate on-line etiquette, create an understanding of safe parameters, and develop a foundation as a responsible, life-long digital user.
  • Learning Commons transforms traditional library spaces to better incorporate exploratory learning through various methods including print resources, technology, innovation, creativity, and hands-on application.  Enhancements will include the addition of MakerSpaces which will take the collaborative learning and hands-on elements a step further.  With dedicated space, students can invent, design, create prototypes, and produce products through the use of 3-D printers and latest technology.
  • PBIS - Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is a process for creating school environments which are more predictable and effective for achieving academic and social goals.  PBIS will enhance our current systems and practices, as well as, continue to improve our culture.
